The 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, featuring 12 teams split into two groups over 33 matches across 24 days, came to an end yesterday with Australia being crowned world champions for the seventh time.
Winning the toss in yesterday’s final, the Australian captain invited England to bat first.
England opened their innings with Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones. The Australian bowlers managed to dismiss both openers inside 5 overs, with the score on 32.
Two more wickets fell soon after, leaving England on 70 for 4, and it was captain Nat Sciver-Brunt who once again took on the responsibility of rebuilding the innings.
She and Freya Kemp put together an 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket, helping England’s total climb past 150.
Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 58 off 53 balls, while Freya Kemp played a quick knock of 44 off 28.
Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton, Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland each picked up a wicket.
Chasing a target of 151, Australia lost their first wicket in just the second over, with Lauren Bell striking early.
However, Phoebe Litchfield and Beth Mooney came together for the second wicket and built a 100-run partnership. That partnership along with the innings played by both batters put the win firmly within Australia’s grasp.
Phoebe Litchfield scored 48, while Beth Mooney was the top scorer of the innings with 64 off 49 balls, hitting 10 fours.
This was Beth Mooney’s third consecutive half-century in Women’s T20 World Cup finals for Australia.
Australia cruised to victory, reaching 153 for the loss of just 3 wickets in 17.1 overs, winning by 7 wickets and claiming their seventh T20 World Cup title at this, the tenth edition of the tournament.
England, meanwhile, had to settle for runner-up spot for the fourth time in a T20 World Cup and this marked the first time they have failed to win a Women’s Cricket World Cup that they hosted.
The chase also set a new record for the highest successful run chase in a Women’s T20 World Cup final.
A crowd of 28,887 attended yesterday’s match, setting a new record for the highest attendance at a women’s cricket match held in England.
Beth Mooney was named Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament.
