Several major changes have been introduced to the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) regulations for the 2026–27 season. These include the removal of the previous minimum overseas-player requirement and the introduction of an open-market direct signing model.
According to cricket.com.au, under the new regulations, Sydney Thunder’s management has decided to free up its marquee overseas player spot in order to retain local talent. The move is particularly aimed at keeping wicketkeeper-batter Tahlia Wilson within the squad.
Sydney Thunder had previously pre-signed Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu on a three-season deal. However, despite one year remaining on her contract, the regulatory changes and strategic adjustments to the squad mean Chamari will miss out on representing Sydney Thunder in the 2026 WBBL season.
